I am a highly skilled illustrator with three decades of professional experience undertaking freelance work and as a children’s book illustrator. I have successfully collaborated on projects with large publishing houses as well as small design teams. I have experience producing and delivering workshops and art instruction on a range of levels from primary to adult education.
I possess a well-developed range of traditional art-making and design skills. These include drawing with pencil, charcoal and ink as well as painting in watercolour, acrylic and oils utilising a number of surface preparation techniques. I have a practical understanding of perspective, colour and design theory. I enjoy demonstrating and sharing my accumulated knowledge with others.
A typical school workshop begins with a short introduction and a brief history of my book illustration. I then give a description of the process I use to create an illustration from a piece of text. I show examples of each step from first sketch to finished artwork. I also show examples of proofs and finished books. For the second part of my workshop I do a painting demonstration while answering questions from students. If desired, I can take the demonstration artwork home to be finished and have it framed before delivering it back to the school. The dolphin is a sample from a primary school workshop. I currently live in Newcastle, Australia and can be contacted through this website regarding fees and availability.
